The Method
Three shifts.Regain coherence.
FLAME is a simple, science-based method for staying open, clear and adaptable under pressure. It trains the one skill underneath performance, wellbeing and growth: the capacity to update.
The core idea
You don't see the world as it is.You predict it.
Your brain is a prediction machine. It runs on models built from your past — and most of the time, it acts on the prediction, not on what's actually in front of you. That's efficient. It's also how smart people get stuck: the model stops updating. FLAME is the practical method for noticing your predictions, updating them, and acting from clarity instead of habit.
The three shifts
Simple to learn. Powerful in practice.
Shift State
Regulate your inner condition.
When pressure rises, your physiology narrows your thinking — the brain shifts to defend, not to learn. Shifting state is how you create the capacity to think clearly and respond well instead of react. It's the foundation everything else is built on.
- Notice your physiological state
- Down-regulate under pressure
- Create space before responding
Check Story
Examine the story running your predictions.
Every reaction is driven by a story — an automatic prediction about what's happening and what it means. Often it's outdated. Checking the story is how you catch the prediction, question it, and update your model so you can see what's actually here.
- Catch the automatic story
- Ask what else could be true
- Update the model with curiosity
Take Action
Choose and act from clarity, curiosity and purpose.
With a regulated state and an updated story, you can choose your response instead of running on autopilot. Action turns insight into impact — small, deliberate moves, tested against reality, that compound into real change.
- Choose, don't react
- Run small experiments
- Act from purpose, not fear
The science behind FLAME
Built on the neuroscience of the predictive brain.
FLAME isn't pop psychology. It's grounded in how the brain actually works — and in decades of research on prediction, plasticity and performance.
The predictive brain
We live in a world of predictions. Perception is the brain's best guess, corrected by error. Change the inputs and you change the guess.
The trap of expertise
Expertise is a high-confidence model. It's powerful — until the world changes and the model doesn't. The capacity to update is what keeps expertise from becoming a cage.
Neuroplasticity
The brain rewires with attention and repetition. Predictions can be retrained. Your patterns — and your future — can change.
The human advantage
In an age of accelerating intelligence, the durable edge isn't knowing more. It's the human capacity to stay open and update faster than the world changes.
“The capacity to update is the edge that lasts.”
Where it works
One method, wherever the pressure is.
For individuals
Think more clearly, react less, and stay curious when it counts — at work and beyond.
For teams
A shared language for navigating change together: state, story, action.
For organisations
A culture that adapts faster than its competitors — embedded, not just inspired.
