From Cancer to Confidence: Terry Healey on Rebuilding Identity After Adversity
Diagnosed with a rare fibrosarcoma at 20, Terry Healey went through more than 30 surgeries and was left with a permanent facial difference. The scars on the inside, he discovered, were harder to heal than the ones the world could see.
Terry's story is about what happens after survival — the deeper reckoning of rebuilding an identity when the face in the mirror has changed and the world responds differently to you. Out of that lived experience he built a seven-part survival kit, and later the ReBAR resilience framework at the heart of his book The Resilience Mindset.
What makes this conversation useful rather than just moving is how practical it gets: gratitude, visualization, reflection, and deliberately surrounding yourself with the right people — small daily practices that transformed not just his recovery but his whole approach to life and leadership. For anyone navigating personal crisis or professional upheaval, Terry has walked the harder version of the road.
